Anti-wrinkle injections patient information and FAQ

NOTE: This information is for patients and is intended as an informational resource.

What is the ingredient in anti-wrinkle injections?
The neuromodulators are chemicals produced by a bacteria. The injections, however, are well-studied, purified, and administered only in small doses.

Neuromodulating anti-wrinkle injections were first used in cosmetic procedures after an accidental discovery by a cosmetic surgeon, whereby while treating facial asymmetry caused by facial nerve paralysis, patients also enjoyed fewer frown lines (glabellar lines) between the eyebrows. After clinical trials, the first neuromodulating anti-wrinkle injection product was released to market.

Is this neuromodulator used in medicine?
These injections are used for upper motor neuron syndrome, focal hyperhidrosis, blepharospasm, strabismus, chronic migraine, and bruxism.

How do anti-wrinkle injections work?
Wrinkles are formed by contractions of facial muscles, so the injection is used to interrupt the nerve impulse that triggers the muscle to contract, causing it to relax. This therefore stops the skin from wrinkling.

Where are anti-wrinkle injections used?
Anti-wrinkle injections are often used around the forehead and between the eyebrows to prevent frown lines, and around the corners of the eyes to prevent crows’ feet. The neuromodulator also has medical uses, particularly for conditions that are characterised by muscle tension or spasticity.

The most common areas on the face are:

  • Eyes, for crow’s feet and fine lines on the lower eyelids
  • Forehead – horizontal lines, often just above the eyebrows
  • Frown – vertical lines between the eyebrows
  • Mouth – fine lines present on the upper lip or at the corners of the mouth
  • Chin – for ‘pebbly chin’ or ‘orange peel’ chin
  • Neck – vertical bands caused by the platysma muscle
  • Masseters muscle – for a square cheek and contouring

What can’t anti-wrinkle injections do?
Anti-wrinkle injections cannot erase lines that appear when your face is at rest, but over time, these lines can be softened in appearance. (Dermal fillers or skin resurfacing may be more suitable.)

Are there side-effects?
There are some small possible side-effects from this neuromodulator, including mild swelling or redness, lasting less than an hour. A small bruise may appear. A rare condition called ptosis (‘droopy eyelid’ or brow) may appear and last up to a month, however there are eye-drops to temporarily relieve this condition in some cases. Your doctor will discuss specific risks with you prior to your treatment.

Will anti-wrinkle injections affect my facial expressions?
Your facial expressions do change, but the way your face looks will stay the same, since some small muscles have been relaxed. This stops the wrinkles, but it doesn’t stop your face from moving naturally – you will look natural and normal, but have less creases on your face.

As with any cosmetic or medical procedure, there is always a small risk that we cannot account for, due to our unique biology. Anti-wrinkle injections have been well-studied and is considered safe to use in humans when properly administered for cosmetic purposes. ENRICH’s doctors are experienced in anti-wrinkle injection application for beautifying the face, so you are in good hands. ENRICH always uses experienced doctors for injections, never nurses.

Does an anti-wrinkle injection hurt?
There is often some discomfort, but a cold-pack or anaesthetic cream can effectively solve this. The procedure is very brief, so any discomfort is short-lived.

Do I have to take time off work?
No – you can walk into the clinic, have your treatment, and walk out. Nobody will be able to tell you have had treatments.

How long do the results last for?
Typical results last for between four and six months. For lasting results, you will need fresh treatments.

How much do anti-wrinkle treatments cost?
Each treatment is unique in how much substance is applied, and therefore you will need to consult with your cosmetic practitioner to have your treatment tailored to your needs.
