Liposuction can be used to reshape fat almost anywhere on the body. Belly liposuction is the most popular treatment area.
The results of abdominal liposuction can have quite an impact on our post-surgery perceptions of ourselves because our abdomens are visible to us from multiple angles. We view and interact with our soft middles in several ways. It is the most significant being when we look in the mirror and when we look down, and the size of our belly is visible and when we put on clothes.
Our belly size and contour affect our perception of ourselves in a much more significant way than most other parts of our bodies, for example, we can’t see the back of ourselves with any clarity, mirror or no mirror. If the back of our hair is messy or we have toilet paper stuck on our shoe, we don’t know about it – and as a result, often don’t care. Most of our body is invisible to us or at least not obvious and therefore less distorted by our viewpoint.
A large, jiggly belly can make us feel bigger, even if we are at a healthy weight overall. In men, this effect is exaggerated due to the influences of androgenic hormones like testosterone that dictate where we store fat.
In many women, under the influence of oestrogen, fat is directed to the thighs, belly, breasts and buttocks. As women age, the hormonal profile shifts (fewer oestrogens and more androgens), and fat shifts to the belly. Women and men end up in a similar situation in older age with skinny legs and a round belly. We call this the ‘apple’ shape.
You don’t have to be an apple shape to benefit from abdominal liposuction. Bellies come in all shapes and sizes, and recontouring is available to almost anyone who wants it.
Getting rid of belly fat: got a clothes problem?
The girth of our abdomen is particularly important when it comes to how we fit into clothes. Doing up buttons, zippers and belts is a constant reminder of where we’re at in the ‘belly-fat scales’, but the size of our belly doesn’t just affect the bottom half. We also see the visual impacts in our top half.
Shirts, blouses and t-shirts can fit our shoulders well, but a large belly can let us down by opening up buttons and creating unflattering bulges.
Over time, we often gain weight rather than losing it due to metabolic changes, so belly fat tends to increase as we age.
Liposuction to get rid of belly fat
‘If you can pinch it, you can lipo it!’ says Dr Michael Rich at ENRICH Clinic, our liposuction expert. Liposuction can successfully remove fat from the abdominal area, making a notable difference to the look of a body with the one procedure.
Abdominal liposuction can make a very positive difference in how a person sees themselves and their contours.

Getting rid of belly fat in men
Belly liposuction can be a game-changer for men and women alike. However, this procedure is a real favourite amongst men, since one of a man’s major fat-carrying areas is the abdomen. Hormonally men are prone to carrying fat in the belly. Another area significant to men is the chest area, in which excessive fat can create the appearance of breasts (‘man boobs’).
We also perform male breast reductions using liposuction, which can be a great partner to belly fat liposuction. We can usually treat both areas at the same appointment.
Other popular areas of the body to treat in men include the back, hips and flanks. Liposuction helps create definition, creating a slimmer, more muscular profile. Men report that after belly liposuction they fit into clothes better, their waist size has dropped, and they feel more confident going shirtless.
Post-baby belly fat and loose skin
After pregnancy, the skin around the belly can stretch and collect a pocket of fat that won’t budge no matter what you do. This pocket of belly fat and stretched skin can rain on your self-love parade, resulting in body confidence issues (despite your body’s incredible feat in growing your baby).
Women say that sometimes it’s just this little area of the tummy that they aren’t happy with after their pregnancy, so being able to correct it significantly improves confidence at a time when it may already be thin on the ground. Going from feeling happy with your body to unhappy is a difficult pill to swallow as a cost of pregnancy, so taking positive steps can make a big difference.
Liposuction is an excellent option for post-pregnancy pockets of stubborn fat, but pairing liposuction with skin tightening treatments is also very popular post-pregnancy. Speak to your cosmetic doctor about your options.
Recovery from belly fat liposuction
Recovery from liposuction varies from person to person and depends mostly on how much fat we remove from the abdomen – the more fat removed, the longer the recovery period. Expect some small life modifications in the first few weeks (only light exercise, compression garments), bruising and swelling.
The full results of the treatment are revealed only once the swelling starts to dissipate, which can take several weeks. Dr Rich will explain what to expect.
