Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) Injections Melbourne

What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy draws on your body’s own healing capacities by using your cells, called platelets, to regenerate and rejuvenate your skin and hair follicles. Packed with growth factors, PRP is fast becoming a popular rejuvenation and healing tool.

PRP injections can reduce the appearance of acne scarring and plump areas of the face that have lost volume over time with the normal ageing process. In a cosmetic sense, PRP injections can help to refresh skin tone, help improve fine wrinkles and lines and improve skin texture and firmness.

PRP hair treatments for hair loss targets and stimulates under-developed and under-active hair follicles to encourage hair growth, proving to be an effective hair-growth treatment in some circumstances.

A ENRICH Clinic, we primarily use PRP Treatments for hair loss and acne scarring.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy – the injections

We also use a state-of-the-art multi-pronged injector, which means shorter treatment times, less downtime and less bruising. We use anaesthetic where required so you feel comfortable the entire time. Our multi-pronged injector also creates a better patient experience by performing multiple injections in less time.

Each session takes one or two hours, depending on the treatment area.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy – post-treatment and results

Some swelling is to be expected for a few days after treatment, plus some redness. The treatment area will likely feel warmer than other skin areas, with slight bruising possible. The multi-pronged injector helps to reduce bruising.

Results are slow to appear because your skin is actually growing new cells and rejuvenating the old ones. Several treatments will be necessary before the full effect is apparent, so patience is important, as is managing your expectations of instant results. PRP therapy is a longer-term investment in your appearance.

At first, you will notice an improvement in skin elasticity and texture as collagen production ramps up and cells begin to develop. Naturally, everyone is a bit different, so we can’t expect the same results for everyone – some of you will have good results, while others will have even better results. Because PRP works on your cells, anything that dulls cell performance, like smoking, stress, or being unwell, can hinder results.

Again it’s important to understand that PRP therapy is a long-term process. Your platelets are aiding in the growth of new cells, so it is not instantaneous. Treatments last for up to two years, though this depends on your skin type and individual factors. Your dermatologist will be able to explain what you can expect from your PRP treatments or if there is an alternative for you.

You may choose to combine PRP with other cosmetic treatments, like dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections, lasers, or heat therapy’s that can help your skin journey. Researching your options and understanding what is best for your skin type with any treatment is important.

Suitable Areas for PRP injections

PRP injections can be used almost anywhere, and in medicine, they often are, but in cosmetics, some key areas are more popular than others. Facsitesreas are most popular in the cosmetic field. “Vampire facials” were once made popular by celebrities. Do your research, as other treatments can be more suited to your skin type or issue.

PRP treatments for acne scars

PRP injections can be used to remodel collagen in scars, particularly acne scarring that tends to be smaller in size, making it easier to manage. Not all acne scarring will respond to PRP injections, so have a consultation – your dermatologist will have more information for you.

PRP treatments for the cheeks

If the cheeks need some volume, are starting to droop, or have skin damage of some kind appearing, PRP injections can give cheeks a real boost. Our cheeks are one of the largest areas on our faces and one of the places we notice radiance first. Having fuller, smoother cheeks can enhance your appearance, sometimes dramatically.

PRP treatments for post-baby tummy

The skin on the abdomen stretches considerably during pregnancy, with some women coming out of a full-term pregnancy with crepey, wrinkly skin on the stomach that may feel like it will never disappear. PRP injections can make a lot of difference here, as the PRP can rejuvenate the belly skin somewhat, tightening and providing much-needed collagen and volume.

PRP hair treatments for hair loss in men and women

PRP is a relatively new treatment for hair loss in men and women, stimulating new hair growth by activating stem cells. PRP hair treatments won’t work for everyone, but in some instances cases, they can work well to stimulate new hair growth.

At ENRICH, we have had successful treatments using PRP to stimulate growth and help with hair loss, but it may not be for everybody. Ask your dermatologist if PRP hair treatments will work for you.

PRP extractor we use is key

Many different devices are currently available to filter out the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) once the patient’s blood has been taken. They are not all alike in the quality of the PRP that they produce.

If we think of the normal concentration of platelets in our blood is 1. Then, most tube plus centrifuge devices will only produce increased level of platelets of 1.5 to 2 times normal. In Dr Rich’s opinion, this ratio is not much more effective than re-injecting your own blood, so not a great benefit

At ENRICH, we have the Angel plasma extraction and the Magellan extraction system, state-of-the-art devices that concentrate the platelets significantly more than the syringe centrifuge systems, which are commonly marketed and used. The ratios our devices achieve are between 4 to 6 times the normal levels, delivering better quality PRP. That is, your platelets and growth factors are more densely concentrated in our PRP treatments, giving better results for the same effort and treatment time. There is a cost that comes with achieving these higher level of platelets but it is worthwhile, as we believe the results are significantly better. At ENRICH we do not mix our patients extracted cells with any other material, cells or tissues.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy – the extraction

About 20mls of blood is taken from your arm, which feels like any normal procedure you’d have at the doctor’s where blood is taken. We then put this blood into our state-of-the-art Angel PRP system centrifuge, so the white and red blood cells, and plasma and platelets can be separated out. This takes about 10 minutes. Once separated out, the plasma and platelets are now – voilà! – Platelet-rich plasma. We have PRP. It’s that simple.

Why does PRP therapy work?

PRP therapy works by injecting your now platelet-rich plasma directly into an area to stimulate the growth and rejuvenation of cells in that area. This means that any cell offered a boost will perform better – that means cells are working at their optimal. This could be used in a wound, for example, or as we use it most often, in hair-loss treatments (to stimulate the hair follicle) and for acne scaring and skin rejuvenation (to stimulate skin cells).

In a cosmetic sense, PRP injections can offer rejuvenation quality, but it can be an expensive, long-term endeavour, and there are other cosmetic solutions that may give you visible results faster.
