Hair transplants move hair from one area of your body to another, a treatment for hair loss in men. The cost of this time-consuming activity can be high, not only for the treatment but for the recovery too. Hair transplants are not always successful.
Hair transplants can cost between $4,000 and $15,000, with some costs being:
- How much hair is being transplanted
- The type of hair transplant procedure (follicular unit strip surgery or follicular unit extraction)
- Your surgeon
- Where you have the hair transplant
- Travel costs if applicable
Types of hair transplant
Follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS)
This procedure involves taking skin from a non-bald area (the donor site), with that section sealed off with stitches and hidden by hair, typically on the back of the head. That strip is then divided into tiny grafts, which are then relocated, usually one by one, to the new recipient site. Scarring at the donor site is common, along with some pain and swelling. Cost depends how many relocations you are having, since the strip has to be divided up and each hair prepared to be transplanted.
Follicular unit extraction (FUE)
This type of transplant is where single follicles are removed one at a time from the donor site, which can be more than one area, and then relocated, as opposed to the strip method. This method is often less expensive than FUSS.
Is a hair transplant worth it?
It’s very hard to know if your hair transplant is going to be successful and satisfying for you, compared to what it costs you in time, money and a sore head. You are the only one who can make that decision based on the available information, however it must be said that new innovations in hair loss treatments are proving successful, for a fraction of the cost on all fronts (money, time, and pain).
Alternative hair loss treatment options
There are a few different options when it comes to attempting to get your hair to come back from whence it came. These include platelet-rich plasma (PRP), medications, and light or wave-based treatments, to stimulate the follicles to produce a hair.
Usually, the sooner you get onto hair loss after it begins, the better your chances of getting those follicles up and working again.
