  • How fat-reducing treatments can be an option for chin augmentation

If you’re looking to augment your chin area and prefer not to have chin liposuction, fat-reducing treatments may help.

These treatments are referred to in many different ways, including lipolytic or fat-dissolving treatments. They primarily aid in the breakdown or reduction of fat cells and typically work by targeting adipose tissue, promoting the release of stored fat, and facilitating its metabolism or removal from the body. These treatments are often used in cosmetic procedures or medical therapies aimed at reducing localised smaller fat deposits, such as those on the chin.

Stubborn chin fat (aka submental fat) can be a frustrating holdout, even with a healthy diet and exercise routine. That is because genetics can play a role in our chin appearance. Our genes can influence how much muscle we store, and some people naturally have less muscle density. This can lead to more fat being stored in certain areas. While traditional methods like liposuction might be an answer, some patients find the significant downtime inconvenient.

Localised fat-reducing treatments, on the other hand, offer a minimally invasive alternative to achieve a sculpted chin and a sharper jawline.

What are fat-reducing injections, and how do they work?

fat reducing injections

The most common localised fat-reducing treatment used for chin augmentation is injection lipolysis, which contains an acidic compound. When injected into targeted fat deposits under the chin, the acid breaks down the outer shell of the fat cells, releasing their contents and shrinking the overall fat deposit. Your body then naturally processes and eliminates these broken-down fat cells through your lymphatic system.

While the process sounds easy, lipolysis is not a one-and-done solution. Some patients may see slight improvements after a single session, but most require a few treatments spaced several weeks apart.

The number of sessions needed depends on the amount of fat you want to remove and your response to the treatment. Typically, patients undergo two to four sessions, with some requiring up to six or eight sessions for optimal results.

As for longevity, the good news is that the fat cells destroyed by the injections are gone for good. But this doesn’t mean you’re invincible to future fat accumulation. You need to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle to preserve your sculpted chin and prevent new fat cells from forming in the treated area.

What are the risks of fat-reducing injections?

Fat-reducing treatments are invasive and do come with potential risks primarily because of:

  • Unapproved ingredients. These agents haven’t undergone rigorous safety testing, and their effects on the body are not fully understood. Only a registered health practitioner should administer this treatment.
  • Improper administration. Another significant risk factor is having the injections administered by someone who is not a qualified healthcare professional. A skilled and experienced doctor or dermatologist understands facial anatomy and proper injection techniques, minimising the risk of complications.

The side effects of unapproved ingredients or improper administration include:

  • Permanent scars
  • Serious infections
  • Skin deformities
  • Cyst formation
  • Deep, painful knots

Who is a good candidate for fat-reducing treatments to the chin?

diagram showing how liposuction works before and after

To be a good candidate for fat-reducing treatments to the chin, you should be in good overall health with no underlying medical conditions that could compromise healing or make the procedure unsafe.

You should also not have any active infections or skin conditions near the injection site. Broken skin or infections can increase the risk of complications during the procedure.

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, exercise caution and avoid fat-reducing injections due to a lack of research on their safety during these times.

The ideal candidate for the treatment has mild to moderate excess fat under the chin. If you have significant fat deposits, you may see better results with chin liposuction or fat scraping. This is because fat-reducing treatments are most effective for targeted fat reduction, not large-scale fat removal. Our aesthetic doctors can advise you about the best treatment for your case.

Good quality skin with minimal laxity is also critical. Fat-reducing injections primarily target fat, not loose skin. If your primary concern is loose skin under the chin, other procedures like a neck lift or other skin-tightening treatments might be more suitable. Again, a consultation with our doctors can help determine which treatment best addresses your goals.

If you’re considering other cosmetic procedures in the near future, discuss them with your doctor to ensure they can be safely combined with fat-dissolving injections.
