  • Am I too overweight to get liposuction?

Liposuction procedures can be done on very overweight people, with the most important factor being the ability to heal within a reasonable time frame. There are limitations to this, however there is no definitive line – you will need to have a consultation to see what your best options are.

There is a procedure known as large volume liposuction or mega liposuction, where large quantities of fat are removed in one sitting, however there are boundaries to how much fat can be removed using this procedure. If you are very overweight and considering liposuction, there are some things you need to know before you start.

#1 – Liposuction can get rid of body fat that impedes movement
Liposuction can help very overweight people to move around in the world a little easier on their weight loss journey. This could mean removing some obtrusive fat that makes exercise difficult, and there is usually no real reason why this can’t be large volume liposuction, to give the person a bit of a head start. Fat that gets in the way of movement is an impedance to a healthy lifestyle and weight loss.

#2 – Over 10 litres of fat can be removed in a few sessions with mega liposuction
This gives a very overweight person the opportunity to maintain their healthy diet and exercise routines while boosting confidence and offering localised fat removal and body shaping. A few sessions can remove more than 10 litres of fat, but the sessions may need to be separated by several weeks or months to allow for healing. Each patient is different, so the time frame will need to be discussed in person with Dr Rich at our Melbourne clinic.

#3 – Liposuction may not be suitable for you yet or at all – individual needs are key
Come into our Melbourne clinic for a consultation with Dr Rich regarding your personal circumstances and body goals. Your individual needs are likely to vary considerably from another very person, and you need personalised attention and assessment. Your weight loss strategy may require several specialists, including a liposuction expert like Dr Rich.

#4 – Liposuction can be used in conjunction with gastric surgery (lap bands, etc.)
Gastric surgery may be in the pipeline to limit food intake and force weight loss. In these cases, liposuction offers a start to weight loss by removing large volumes of fat and reshaping the body. Mega liposuction can be done before, after or in some cases in place of lap banding.

#5 – Liposuction should be part of a weight loss program, not instead of it
Liposuction is for those who are embarking on a weight-loss journey, and not to be used as a weight loss tool by itself – it doesn’t work like that. Without a healthy lifestyle where diet and physical activity is managed, weight will simply reappear elsewhere on the body with poor diet choices and a lack of exercise.

Dr Rich is one of Melbourne’s best liposuction doctors.
