What is sclerotherapy? Varicose veins Melbourne
Sclerotherapy is the use of an injection to treat small, reticular veins and spider veins. It involves the use of a chemical to destroy the affected veins. A solution is injected into the vein that causes the vein to collapse, or ‘sclerose.’ Over a number of weeks, the vein will break down and disappear.
Reticular veins are smaller blue leg veins that typically do not have a bulging appearance. These veins may have smaller, fine veins associated with them. These smaller veins can be bluish or red in colour and are referred to as spider veins or telangiectasia. They occur on the legs and ankles but can also be found on different parts of the body including the chest, abdomen, shoulders and face.
During your initial consultation, your doctor will refer you for a specialised vein ultrasound known as venous mapping. This determines the size of your deeper veins and the direction of blood flow. Blood flow in the veins should travel in one direction only. If the results of this scan are normal, we can safely and effectively treat smaller veins. If the scan shows some kind of abnormality in the vein circulation, we can refer you to a vein specialist for treatment before undertaking treatment on your smaller veins.
A number of factors may contribute to the development of varicose or spider veins:
- Family history
- Hormonal changes such as pregnancy, menopause and the use of medication containing hormones such as the oral contraceptive pill
- Limited regular movement
Following treatment, the veins may appear to look worse with some bruising and a possible brownish discolouration possible. The appearance will improve over a number of weeks.
What about varicose veins? ENRICH Clinic Melbourne
Varicose veins are the larger, dilated and ropey veins that can occur in the legs or pelvic area. Sclerotherapy cannot be used for the treatment of varicose veins. If varicose veins are an issue for you, we can refer to doctors and physicans who speicalise in the treatment of these veins.
