There are many factors that may increase the likelihood of developing varicose or spider veins.
Factors that predispose you to developing varicose or spider veins include:
- Family history
- Hormonal changes: pregnancy, menopause and medications containing hormones, e.g. the oral contraceptive pill
- Pregnancy: during pregnancy there is a increase in the amount of blood in the body, which, together with the weight of the developing baby and the pressure it puts on the venous system, can cause veins to enlarge and become more prominent
- Lack of movement: sitting or standing for a long time may force the veins to work harder to pump blood to the heart
