Rightly or wrongly, most of us have a body part that we like less than the rest. Choosing to change that part for yourself permanently can be a big decision.
Liposuction is one of those forever changes that tends to come with a great deal of thinking time, with all our patients having pretty well-defined ‘why’s. In our experience, these reasons tend to fit into a few neat categories and can overlap.
Why people have liposuction
Undergoing long-lasting cosmetic procedures is a profoundly personal decision, therefore understanding why people get liposuction has both a simple and complex answer.
It’s simple: “I want a nicer body.”
The most basic answer is that people want a better-looking body. You may already be working very hard for a certain body shape, but aren’t getting the results you were after. Or, you could be at a healthy weight and have some bits you wish would go away.
Trying to achieve your ideal body can become extremely frustrating. Exercise and diet modification can do a lot of the work, but we can only exercise and diet so much. We need to be mindful that frustration doesn’t turn into an obsession, and the impact such a thing can have on our lives.
Getting liposuction or other body contouring procedures like fat freezing can make short work of giving you a body shape you enjoy more. That’s why people get it done. What this body shape looks like can mean different things to each of us.
It can just mean restoring or creating a waistline, removing some fat pads on thighs, recontouring the bottom or removing a bit of excess tummy fat. One thing liposuction is not is a weight loss solution.
Once our patients eventually decide to have liposuction, we find that the majority never look back. It’s usually been something they’ve been thinking about for a long time, and decided on very cautiously and carefully.
Why people have liposuction – the more complex the answer
- To have a more proportional body
- Boost self-confidence
- To fit into individual items of clothing that you have never felt comfortable in
- Remove the tricky bit of fat that doesn’t move with exercise or diet
- Reduce excess breast tissue (without damaging milk ducts) that results in mobility problems and back pain (women)
- Reduce excess breast tissue (gynecomastia) that causes embarrassment/ill-fitting clothing (men)
Why people have liposuction – having a more proportional body
The body you’re born with may not have proportions that are deemed ‘attractive’ in our society. Yeah yeah, why do we care, etc. etc., but we do care. Sometimes a lot. It’s just how the human brain works.
We may think our ratios are imbalanced. This might include such combinations as a long torso and short legs, broad shoulders and skinny calves, long arms/legs and a short torso, and so on. The choose-your-own-adventure of beautiful and curious body types is endless.
Being more evenly proportioned, typically involving hip-to-waist ratios, top half versus bottom half, left to right balance, is often the goal of body contouring procedures. Men and women tend to want different areas worked on, to accentuate curves or muscle, remove bulges, or to slim down certain areas. Ultimately, the goal is usually balanced proportions.
Why people have liposuction – to boost self-confidence
We can’t see ourselves objectively, but we think we can – and in the days of social media and body perception, can over-criticise ourselves.
Self-love should always be the goal, so on your way out today, shake your booty in the mirror, give yourself a high five, and walk out the door in a blaze of moxie. You’re healthy and human.
But being human, we may just as easily focus on a part of ourselves that we think is less than, getting a bit preoccupied with it, whether it deserves it or not.
Our options are to accept and rejoice in this body part; hide the body part; or modify the body part. Acceptance can take some tough emotional work, and hiding tends to solve our issues in public but can feel terrible in private. This leaves modification, but modification can be as difficult a choice as acceptance or hiding. Or, like acceptance, modification can be life-changing.
In our experience with procedures like liposuction – that have been long-awaited – once it’s done and dusted, our patients experience a renewed sense of self-confidence.
In a world that can judge you based on looks for large swathes of your existence, feeling better about how you look can change the way you face each day. In this respect, body modifications can be a game-changer for improving self-confidence.
Why people have liposuction -to fit into individual items of clothing
This isn’t fitting into a smaller pair of jeans, but fitting into – in some cases – any pair of jeans. Having a body that doesn’t fit into many classic outfits (jeans and a t-shirt, for example) can be a real pain. Poorly fitting garb can snatch your confidence.
By no means does this suggest that the only solution for not fitting into clothes is getting liposuction – it’s not. Getting clothes that fit is the ideal solution. But, paired with other reasons our patients opt for liposuction, this reason will make perfect sense to many of you, particularly women with very large breasts (see below).
In a recent American survey, 57 per cent of women said they felt like there were simply no clothes designed to fit their body type. This is crazy when you think about just how many women’s clothes are on the market. Designers are only creating clothes for their preferred body shapes and sizes. And that’s all. Everyone else – us regular folk – are left thinking it’s us that’s wrong.
The primary issue is that clothes, for some reason, seem to only come in one shape, to fit one kind of body, scaled up or down in sizes that are in no way standardised. This isn’t a body problem or a men’s or women’s problem; this is a clothing industry problem.
There’s nothing shameful about wanting to look great in your favourite clothes.
Why people have liposuction – breast reductions (women and men)
Women with very large breasts can suffer from a whole host of problems from back pain, to trouble exercising, to finding clothes that don’t just technically ‘fit’, but don’t over accentuate the breast area.
Liposuction as a breast reduction method is a much safer, less expensive and less traumatic procedure than a surgical breast reduction. It is an excellent option for women who want to keep breast tissue intact, since breast reductions by liposuction preserve ducting, removing only fat.
Men with ‘man boobs’ can have the excess fat from the chest removed to create a slimmer, less breasty chest area. Men can accumulate excess fat in the chest due to weight gain, or as a hormonal disturbance that causes the development of actual breast tissue (gynecomastia).
