Chin liposuction is a simple, quick procedure that can make a huge difference to your facial profile. The chin is an area that demarcates our face in ways that you can’t fake or cover up with makeup. To those whom a double chin or sagging jowls causes aesthetic dissatisfaction, chin liposuction at our Melbourne clinic can work wonders.
Why does a double chin occur?
Fat under the chin can be a genetic thing, while in others it can be specific bone structure that allows flesh to hang rather than cling. Anyone with a small chin has less options for hiding soft skin and fatty tissue around the chin area, and a fold is created – the double chin.
The fat is actually not your chin, but your neck – the chin is a specific anatomical feature of your face, whereas the area below your chin is actually the front of your neck and bottom of your jaw. Fatty deposits under the chin is normal as we age, but can add years and weight to your face, whether you earnt it or not. A double chin is not always related to age or weight.
Chin liposuction – what happens during the procedure?
Liposuction on the chin and neck area is a fatty-deposit removal solution. Chin liposuction is a surgical procedure, albeit a small one with a short recovery period, performed as a day procedure at our Melbourne clinic. The results can be dramatic, shaving years off your face.
Chin liposuction is performed by numbing the area with a special tumescent fluid, after which small incisions are made so that the very small tube (cannula) can be inserted into the area. The chin only has small amounts of fat, so these deposits are easily removed, leaving a just-right layer of fat to ensure your chin stays looking natural.
Recovery from chin liposuction
One of the huge benefits of chin liposuction is that you only have local anaesthetic, not general anaesthetic. General anaesthetic carries much greater risks, with newer liposuction techniques avoiding this entirely. Liposuction is safer than ever, and a small procedure on the chin and neck area is considered very low-risk.
The small incisions used during chin liposuction heal up like any small cut to the skin, and the whole chin and neck area is usually back to normal within several days. Compression garments will need to be worn for several days, as per instructions from your surgeon. Bruising and swelling may last for up to two weeks, but is usually quick to dissipate due to the small treatment area.

You will be advised to wait to perform certain activities, since while chin liposuction is a minimally-invasive procedure, your tissues will need to be treated gently for a smooth recovery. Any discomfort can be managed with regular pain-killers, with some tenderness expected.
You can return to normal activities very soon after chin liposuction, but several days off work may be required for aesthetic purposes only, depending on what you had planned.
If you have a high-visibility occupation or events to attend, you may wish to consider some extra time off or prepare to wear clothes/scarves/special products that can disguise any remaining bruising. Specific disguising techniques can be discussed with your surgeon, who will have a range of options for bruising and blemishes, such as second skins and colour-matched make-up.
Risks of chin liposuction
This procedure is considered very low risk. Dr Michael Rich, who does all the liposuction at our Melbourne clinic, is one of Australia’s foremost liposuction experts. This means you are in the very best of hands.
Every surgery does come with risks, however, which Dr Rich will explain to you prior to treatments.
The risks of liposuction include the possibility of infection, though this is mitigated with antibiotics. There is also a small chance that the results will not be as intended, though this risk is very low with an excellent surgeon.
Will people notice that I’ve had chin liposuction?
The results of chin liposuction are usually very subtle to the untrained eye, and people don’t notice that you’ve changed your appearance, but they will notice you look better. Compliments on how well you are looking or how you look as if you have lost weight are often in plentiful supply after chin liposuction.
Chin liposuction can make a profound difference to your appearance. Many people are not aware of chin liposuction as a cosmetic surgery option, so they will think you just ‘look good’.

Most people don’t walk into a cosmetic surgery office and request chin liposuction; instead, they come in unhappy with the lower third of their face. Chin liposuction may be recommended as either a stand-alone treatment or as part of a larger facial sculpting plan.
Chin liposuction is invisible to the casual observer, so you can feel confident that nobody will know. What you will notice is that you no longer have to try to hide your double chin in photos or under clothes. You can look life directly in the eye, instead of trying to angle your way around having your double chin frozen in time.
How long does chin liposuction last for?
The change in your profile will be lasting, because liposuction is a fat-removal procedure. Your fat cells – of which there is a finite amount in your adult body – don’t migrate around your body, but have a ‘home base’. Your chin fat cells are like your other fat cells – they grow and shrink in response to the directions given by your body hormonally and genetically, rather than increasing in number.
This means that once you remove fat cells from one place in your body, they are gone for good. It then becomes critical that your surgeon has left enough fat in the area so that should you put on weight after liposuction (which is normal throughout your life), you do so evenly throughout your body, including the face and chin, as you would normally.
Will chin liposuction leave me with saggy skin?
No. Skin usually stretches and retracts to accommodate its contents, much like a balloon does. There are also many other skin-tightening treatments that can be performed to tighten any saggy skin that has not retracted back.
Skin tightening treatments that complement chin liposuction
Chin liposuction can be enhanced with skin-tightening treatments. Sagging skin is not an immediate result of liposuction itself, but it may become more obvious after the fat is removed from the area.
We have a range of skin-tightening treatments, with our new favourite being non-invasive radiofrequency treatments using the ThermiRF device. Radiofrequency treatments tighten skin immediately by shrinking proteins, but treatments improve production of collagen and elastin over the months following treatment. Results keep improving over time.

Radiofrequency treatments target fibroblasts, your collagen-producing cells, and stimulates them into action. The result is tighter, smoother skin that lasts. No surgery, no pain, no needles; just a beautiful neckline.
If you have sagging, wrinkled skin on your neck, radiofrequency treatments can dramatically enhance your chin liposuction procedure results. Your surgeon will evaluate your face and neckline, and recommend the best option for results you can both be proud of, and that will last into the future.
How can I prevent a double chin appearing again in the future?
Luckily, once the fatty tissue is eliminated via chin liposuction, it can never again be a problem for you. What may crop up as you age is sagging neck skin or platysma bands that protrude, which are treated differently.
Platysma bands in the neck are the vertical muscles that when you grimace are visible. As we age, these become more pronounced as they tighten and the skin covering them becomes less elastic. We have individual treatments for other neck, chin and jaw concerns you may have, but they will likely not include liposuction. It’s a one-stop procedure.
Caring for your new chin and neck
Your immediate aftercare is one step your surgeon will go over with you, but taking care of your lovely new profile is the next, and will be ongoing. One of the most important things you can do for your face and neck is to avoid getting sun on your skin in those areas, since the skin is thinner and more easily damaged than other areas of the body. The neck and face are also the areas most likely to face the sun.
Your surgeon will offer you advice for caring for the skin on your neck, and recommend any ongoing maintenance treatments that could enhance your profile as you age.
CHIN LIPOSUCTION FAQ
Any form of liposuction means the permanent removal of fat cells from the body, meaning the results are long-lasting. If you gain a significant amount of weight, a double chin is unlikely to be the area you collect fat so you can reasonably expect to maintain your results over time, even with weight fluctuations.
Educate yourself on how fat works in the body so you have a basic understanding of what the procedure is achieving and how to care for your great results over time.
If you are generally healthy and can heal well, you can have liposuction. There are some instances where it is not appropriate; for example, we cannot perform liposuction on anyone pregnant. If you are elderly, generally unwell or unable to heal well, then liposuction may not be the best option, at least at the moment. Every surgery comes with risks, and your ability to heal quickly and completely is important.
There are two main subgroups of patients who opt for chin liposuction: those with a genetic double chin and those with weight or age-related double chins. We treat these groups the same, but the former group is likely to come in at a younger age than the latter.
We have other effective options for spot-fat removal, including fat-dissolving injections and fat freezing. We tend to prefer liposuction over other methods because it offers us the greatest control over results for this important facial profile area. Our preference doesn’t mean we don’t get great results from injections or fat freezing; just that there are great tools for the job that already exist that we know, love and trust.
Your jawline is a key area of your face and ensuring smooth results is our priority. If there is a reason why liposuction isn’t appropriate, we will provide other suitable options to help you decide.
We can also do skin tightening if sagging skin is your complaint. If you do not have a healthy lifestyle and diet, a double chin may benefit from some changes to shed the extra weight that is contributing to the neck appearance before we consider other options.
Every surgery comes with risks, and liposuction is no different, though it’s important to understand that the chin/neck area is a very small liposuction procedure. We have an excellent track record at ENRICH Clinic, so while there is no expectation of complications, they do sometimes unexpectedly occur. We will fully inform you of what to look out for as you heal so that you can call us and we can investigate without delay.
The risks of any liposuction treatment include internal punctures, infection and nerve damage. Your practitioner counts for everything here, so choose the best in the business and don’t risk your looks with an inexperienced or cheap physician.
You can expect to pay in the low thousands for chin liposuction at a high-end clinic with the very best liposuction experts in Australia. You can also expect a high level of service and great results, so do your homework and seek out the best. Long-lasting body treatments where the stakes, shouldthings go wrong, are high, are not a time to skimp.
We numb the treatment area with a local anaesthetic before your treatment, so the procedure itself is painless. There may be some discomfort after treatment that is managed effectively with over-the-counter pain medication. Most people report the recovery period to be very tolerable and do not experience pain.
Because chin liposuction is a short procedure with very minimal damage to a small area of tissue, you can expect healing to be quick. In our experience, it takes 1-2 weeks for the swelling to resolve and the area to look normal. Once all the swelling has resolved, your new profile will be visible.
It depends on how swollen the area has become and if there is any residual bruising. You will have incision marks in a discrete area that will heal quickly and leave just a small scar that fades quickly. We use microcannulas, which need only a very small entry point, thus visible signs of your procedure are minimal.
You can expect to keep your results over the long-term. Normal ageing of the skin means you will experience normal sagging of the skin, but the fat pocket will not return.
Chin liposuction is a short procedure. We do have pre-appointments and tests to ensure the treatment is safe for you to undergo, which may require multiple appointments. You can expect the procedure itself to take about 45 minutes if we are only working on one area and liposuction is the only treatment you are receiving.
We use a local anaesthetic for our liposuction procedures, which means you do not ‘go under’ (to sleep) while Dr Rich works. You will be able to communicate with us and we ensure you are comfortable and happy during the procedure. Because of the area we are working on, you can’t do much talking, but we can stop and start as required if you need something. Your comfort is our top priority.
Dr Rich will inform you in terms of compression garments before and after your procedure. You may need to wear a compression garment for a short time, but this isn’t always the case. Feel free to call and talk to one of our specialist staff about what you can expect.
Winter is a good choice in terms of timing since you can wear scarves and high necks while you heal, but any time of year is suitable. You can match the timing of your procedure to whatever suits your schedule and budget.
We can do multiple areas of your body at the same appointment. You can have other liposuction treatments or have facial treatments to maximise the impact of your treatment.
Other treatments that go well with chin liposuction include laser treatments, facials and skin tightening or collagen-stimulating treatments, though some procedures are incompatible with recent liposuction treatments. Talk to your practitioner at your appointment.
Once the swelling resolves, you will be able to see your results in their full glory. We estimate about two weeks, though each of you is a little different. Dr Rich will explain what he expects to happen based on how much fat he is removing.
You cannot undo liposuction since we are removing fat cells from the body – that’s for keeps.
It’s possible that, if for some reason you wanted it, we could do a fat graft to replace the fat. In this case, we would suction fat from elsewhere on the body, treat it, and then inject it into the treatment site. We’ve never had to do this! Patients tend to be very satisfied with their treatments.
We find that our patients who opt for chin liposuction are very satisfied with the outcome. Ultimately it is up to you to decide if your procedure is worth it. Getting body-altering procedures is a very personal decision, and you need to do your due diligence and decide for yourself. We can help you with our before and after photographs, and a personal assessment to see what we can achieve.
It may be worth doing other treatments at the same time to maximise your results, for example, dermal fillers or other skin treatments to beautify your complexion. We can remove brown spots and soften fine lines and wrinkles while firming lax skin.
The first port of call is to first think over your desires for your appearance and what you would like to achieve. We recommend coming in for a consultation, but not so we can convince you to undergo the procedure – we work with our patients as individuals. We often operate under a conservative practice, which means we will not persuade you to undergo treatments you don’t need or want.
Coming in for an assessment can help clarify what we can achieve and how. Our expert cosmetic doctors will discuss your concerns with you and be able to offer a treatment plan that matches your preferences. You are under no obligation to go ahead with the procedures we recommend, and we work with you to achieve your goals.
Will I be satisfied with the results of chin liposuction?
One of the key elements of getting any cosmetic procedure is managing your expectations. Cosmetic surgery isn’t magic; it’s a procedure to reshape an area of your body so it is more pleasing to you, more functional, or to treat an illness.
Having reasonable expectations is important, because each of us is built slightly differently, our skin heals and recovers at its own pace, and sometimes things don’t turn out how we expected. Your surgeon will discuss expectations with you, showing you before and after photographs, and explaining what you can reasonably expect from the procedure.
Your aesthetic goals are ours – your happiness and satisfaction is why we do what we do.
