Tumescent liposuction is the gold standard in liposuction techniques, and is broadly used in cosmetic clinics globally. The only other alternative to tumescent liposuction is to have a general anaesthetic, where the tumescent fluid is not essential.
Tumescent liposuction is a procedure whereby a special fluid fills the treatment area prior to the suction element of the procedure. This fluid – tumescent fluid – is used to fill the treatment area to make it firm (tumescent), and therefore easier for the practitioner to perform the procedure with great results. Tumescent fluid also provides the anaesthetic component to fully numb the area.
The benefits of tumescent liposuction at ENRICH
- Safe, gold-standard procedure for liposuction
- Faster healing
- Less bleeding and bruising
What is tumescent liposuction fluid and what are the advantages of tumescent liposuction?
Tumescent fluid is a type of anaesthetic fluid containing a mixture of ingredients that both act to numb, firm, and prevent excess bleeding in the treatment area. Any doctor performing liposuction using tumescent fluid will have completed dermatology or surgical specialty training, and be qualified and experienced in this procedure.
Liposuction is safely performed under local anaesthetic (the tumescent fluid) and is performed in a day hospital or surgery. The procedure takes between 1-2 hours depending on the area and the patient. Patients can go home after the surgery, that day.
Who is not able to benefit from tumescent liposuction?
- Anyone with severe cardiovascular disease
- Anyone with blood clotting/coagulation disorders
- Anyone who is pregnant
- Anyone who is unable to naturally heal well
Is it an advantage to take antibiotics or painkillers during or after tumescent liposuction?
Preoperative antibiotics may be prescribed and pain medication that doesn’t cause drowsiness. The types of medications chosen will depend on the patient and the physician performing the liposuction, with their various advantages discussed with you.
After your procedure, anti-inflammatory drugs will be offered to reduce inflammation and facilitate healing, all a benefit to outcomes of tumescent liposuction. You’ll also be required to wear compression garments to help reduce swelling and bruising.
How long you need to wear these garments for will vary depending on the area treated and the individual. Some liposuction-treated areas, for example, chin liposuction, do not require compression garments to be worn consistently, only at night for a few days, which is an advantage of tumescent liposuction in smaller areas.
How much fat can I have removed?
The most fat that can be removed during a liposuction treatment is usually a maximum of 500ml (half a litre). Because fat is a light, large molecule, half a litre is actually quite a lot of fat. If you fill a jug with water and a jug with the same weight of fat, the fat will take up more room than the water. Large volume-liposuction is not usually performed and comes with an increased set of risks.
Does liposuction hurt?
Liposuction doesn’t hurt, as you are completely numb during the whole process. You may feel a little discomfort and some pressure but no pain – one of the great advantages of tumescent liposuction. You are awake for the procedure, and will be told what to expect before it happens – no surprises!

Research has shown that the overall satisfaction rate of patients undergoing tumescent liposuction is very high, with many advantages such as quick recovery times, less bleeding and bruising to the treated area.
Advantages of tumescent liposuction
In a 2004 review (Hanke et al) of liposuction patients in the United States, the following data were gathered:
- A very minor complication rate (0.14 per cent)
- Seventy-five patients reported no discomfort during the procedure
- Ninety-one per cent were positive about their decision to have liposuction
- Eighty-four per cent had high levels (four marks out of five) of satisfaction with their procedure overall
Can I benefit from transferring liposuction fat to other parts of my body?
Tumescent liposuction removes fat without destroying the fat cells. This means you can use the fat on other parts of your body in what’s known as a fat transfer or fat graft. The most popular places to have fat redistributed on the body include the breasts and buttocks.
You can increase the volume of fat in these areas after liposuction, since most of the fat is viable and able to survive when transplanted.
We perform fat grafting at ENRICH. Speak to your doctor about this at your consultation, since preparations must be made in advance. Fat grafting uses just your own fat, so is preferable for many compared to getting artificial implants.
The fat looks and behaves naturally in the new location, so avoids some of the poor visual outcomes that implants can have. Implants can look and feel unnatural in the body, and may require removal at a later stage. This is one of the advantages of tumescent liposuction over other forms, which may destroy fat cells.
While implants have become far better over the years, your own fat can provide a much safer, more natural look and feel. You can also have a fat transplant without receiving extensive liposuction first, with a small amount of fat removed in a much smaller-scale liposuction procedure, simply for the purposes of a fat transfer.
We do beautiful liposuction.
