Types of skin cancer – Skin cancer clinic Melbourne

Often, skin cancer will stand out as it will appear different to the surrounding skin. There are three main types of skin cancer:

The most serious form of skin cancer is melanoma. These cancers can develop quickly, spreading to other parts of the body. Melanoma will often be flat with an uneven, smudgy online.

You can follow the ABCD rule when looking for melanoma on your body:

A – Asymmetry. Look for spots that are asymmetrical.

B – Border. Look for spots with uneven borders.

C –Colour. Look for spots with uneven or unusual colour.

D – Diameter. Look for spots that are larger than 7mm.

Other forms of skin cancer include:

  • Nodular melanoma
  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma

Protect yourself from the harsh Australian sun with our top tips for sun and skin protection

Cover up

Keep your skin out of the sun with sun protective clothing that covers as much of the skin as possible. Seek shade from the sun during the peak of the day, when the sun and UV level is at its strongest.

Incorporate a broad spectrum, water-resistant physical sunscreen into your daily routine. Use of sunscreen aids not only in the prevention of skin cancer, but also signs of premature ageing such as wrinkles and sun damage.

Regular skin checks – Skin cancer clinic Melbourne

You should become familiar with the look and feel of your skin, so you are able to notice and assess any changes. It is important to take note of any existing moles that might have changed size, shape or colour. Consult a doctor if you notice any suspicious changes in the skin.
