  • Tumescent liposuction – does it hurt and what are the alternatives?

cosmetic surgery trends melbourne

There are a myriad of methods out there for removing stubborn deposits of fat that don’t seem to shift, despite your best intentions and good exercise and dietary habits. But how do they differ? Here, we outline some treatments options for fat busting and what pain management is related to the treatments we undertake here at ENRICH.

Dr Michael Rich is a liposuction specialist consulting in Armadale, Melbourne at ENRICH Clinic. Contact us for liposuction and fat removal treatments today.

Tumescent liposuction – the Gold Standard

Dr Rich is a leading dermatology and cosmetic surgeon in Melbourne. At ENRICH Clinic, we specialise in the tumescent liposuction technique, which involves administering local anaesthetic to areas of subcutaneous fat. This allows for liposuction to be performed under local, rather than general anaesthesia. Tumescent liposuction produces excellent results, with reduced recovery time and less likelihood of bruising. This technique also produces smooth and consistent results, making it the ideal centrepiece of our Body Contouring program, which incorporates options for total body contouring, localised body contouring, skin tightening and cellulite treatments .

The benefits of Tumescent liposuction

Tumescent liposuction boasts a reduced recovery time compared to its more invasive treatment counterparts. The treatment also highlights patient comfort, with the tumescent solution used during the procedure containing a mild sedation instead of needing to use a  general anaesthesia. Tumescent liposuction also results in less bleeding in the treated area, resulting in less bruising, thanks to the fluid used during the procedure.

Does liposuction hurt?

You might be wondering, does tumescent liposuction hurt? Indeed, many patients approach us with concerns about pain and discomfort associated with a liposuction procedure. At ENRICH the comfort of our patients is at the centre of everything we do, and throughout the treatment journey our doctors and nurses work to ensure you feel as relaxed, pain and discomfort free as possible at every turn.

Tumescent liposuction is performed using local anaesthetic. Some initial sting and low-level discomfort is to be expected whilst the local anaesthetic injections are administered, but after that pain and discomfort will be kept to a minimum. Follow the procedure, the treatment area may remain sore and tender for approximately one week.

Smartlipo as an alternative to tumescent liposuction?

Smartlipo is a procedure for removing excess body fat and with some tightening the skin. The treatment involves the use of a small cannula or needle being inserted into the body, allowing doctors to administer laser to the fat deposits. Typically, Smartlipo procedures are not as effective as tumescent liposuction, which removes the fat cells entirely. Some minor to moderate bruising and discomfort is to be expected in the days following treatment. As with many fat reduction procedures, doctors suggest that during the recovery phase patients refrain from any strenuous exercise, maintain good eating habits and drink plenty of water to aid in recovery.

We do not perform SmartLipo at ENRICH Clinic.

How does Smartlipo differ from traditional tumescent liposuction or fat dissolving techniques?

SmartLipo is a laser-based treatment. Fat-dissolving injections or lipolysis is a method of treatment involving the injection of a fat dissolving formulae to the target area and is primarily used to remove smaller deposits of fat around the chin, arms and face. These injections cause the fat cells to combust and then naturally leave the body through the lymphatic system.

We recommend liposuction for larger areas of fat removal and reduction.

Tumescent liposuction administers local anaesthetic to deposits of fat, then, using small cannulas that are only 1.5mm in size, the fat is transitioned out of the body via a suction method, through these cannulas. Tumescent liposuction is performed under local anaesthetic rather than general anaesthesia and the patient can talk to Dr Rich during the procedure. Tumescent liposuction is the safest method of liposuction in the world.

At ENRICH Clinic, we prefer tumescent liposuction for its ability to create excellent and smooth results, with reduced recovery time and less likelihood of bruising. Fat dissolving injections also form part of our Body Contouring program.

So, what should I choose?

At ENRICH Clinic, we pride ourselves on tailoring a range of treatments specific to the patient’s individual and personal treatment goals and wishes. We’ll work closely with you to manage your treatment expectations by treating the person, not the condition. We also work to ensure that pain and discomfort are well managed during both your procedure and recovery time.

In consultation with your doctor, we’ll help you to choose the best possible treatment regime to get you looking and feeling your best from the inside out. Dr Michael Rich champions the tumescent liposuction technique as the gold standard in fat removal procedures. The use of laser or injections can aid in the fine tuning of the process or treat smaller, selective areas and, at ENRICH, we always assess based on the individual needs of each patient.
