Chin & Jowl Tightening & Liposuction

There are quite a few options around to help reduce fat pockets & tighten your chin – some surgical, some non-surgical.  Chin & Jowl Liposuction is a procedure that can adjust your facial profile. The chin is an area that demarcates our face in ways you can’t fake or cover up with makeup.

Why does a double chin occur?

Fat under the chin can be a genetic thing, while in others it can be specific bone structure that allows flesh to hang rather than cling. Anyone with a small chin has less options for hiding soft skin and fatty tissue around the chin area, and a fold is created – the double chin.

The fat is actually not your chin, but your neck – the chin is a specific anatomical feature of your face, whereas the area below your chin is actually the front of your neck and bottom of your jaw. Fatty deposits under the chin is normal as we age, but can add years and weight to your face, whether you earnt it or not. A double chin is not always related to age or weight.

Treatments

Chin and Jowl fat removal can include techniques such as liposuction, fat-dissolving injections or even Trusculpt and depending on the patient’s needs and expectations. In some cases chin injections could be the answer – so adding rather than removing.

Chin Liposuction is one of the most common  fat pockets removal treatments however it may not be for everybody and at ENRICH Clinic we offer a range and a combination of treatments to suit our patients needs.

Chin Liposuction

Chin liposuction – what happens during the procedure?

Liposuction on the chin and neck area is a fatty-deposit removal solution. Chin liposuction is a surgical procedure, performed as a day procedure.

Chin liposuction is performed by numbing the area with a   tumescent fluid, after which small incisions are made to insert the very small tube (cannula) into the area. The chin only has small amounts of fat, so these deposits are removed, leaving a just-right layer of fat to ensure your chin looks natural.

Recovery from chin liposuction

One of the benefits of chin liposuction is that you only have local anaesthetic, not general anaesthetic.

The small incisions used during chin liposuction heal up like any small cut to the skin, and the whole chin and neck area is usually back to normal within several days. Compression garments will need to be worn for several days, as per instructions from your practitioner. Bruising and swelling may last for up to two weeks but usually dissipate due to the small treatment area.

You will be advised to wait to perform certain activities. Chin liposuction is still an invasive surgical procedure and you should treat recovery accordingly. Any discomfort can be managed with regular painkillers, with some tenderness expected.

You can return to normal activities soon after chin liposuction, but several days off work and restricted activity is suggested.

If you have a high-visibility occupation or events to attend, you may wish to consider some extra time off or prepare to wear clothes/scarves/special products that can disguise any remaining bruising. Specific disguising techniques can be discussed with your doctor.

Risks of chin liposuction

Every surgery does come with risks, however, which Dr Rich  & his team will explain all the risks to you prior to treatments. Some of the risks of liposuction include the possibility of infection, bruising, bleeding and soreness.

Managing your own expectations is also important. Every patient is different as every person is unique – so outcomes can vary depending on skin texture, the nature of fat and other factors. Following post-procedure instructions, including wearing the compression garment for the allocated time, is very important not only to attain the best results possible but also for your post-procedure health.

How long does chin liposuction last?

The change in your profile will be lasting because liposuction is a surgical fat-removal procedure. Your fat cells – of which there is a finite amount in your adult body – don’t migrate around your body but have a ‘home base’. Your chin fat cells are like your other fat cells – they grow and shrink in response to the directions given by your body hormonally and genetically rather than increasing in number.

This means that once you remove fat cells from one place in your body, they are gone for good.

Will chin liposuction leave me with saggy skin?

No, not usually, but it can happen in some instances. Skin usually stretches and retracts to accommodate its contents, much like a balloon does. If the fat is removed and the skin is quite saggy, to begin with, there can be some residual saggy.

This is why it is VERY IMPORTANT to follow post-procedure instructions and wear your garment for as long as instructed.  We cannot stress this enough, as wearing the correct garment can affect the result.

What other options are there for the chin?

TruSculpt® iD

The device uses innovative monopolar radiofrequency (RF) technology to target fat selectively and therapeutically heat it until fat cells are slowly removed and excreted through the body naturally.

It’s non-invasive and the procedure is performed by one of our nursing team.  Rather than remove the fast instantly as per liposuction, this procedure heats the fat, and the body gradually excretes it. This can take up to 12 weeks for the excretion process to complete.  TruSculpt® iD can in some cases, remove up to 24% of the fat in the treated area. It can also help with skin tightening in some instances.

TruSculpt® iD on the chin requires 3 treatments over a 6 weeks period and then results will take up to 12 weeks to show completely. Often a second treatment block is required to get a stronger result.  TruSculpt® iD is good for those who have time for results to show, don’t require a large percentage of fat removed from under the chin and prefer a non-invasive treatment.

Fat Dissolving Injections

Fat-dissolving injections contain a substance that breaks down fat cells so the body can reabsorb them in much the same way the fat-heating treatments aim for. This is usually performed in very small areas. Some swelling of the treated area can last for a couple of weeks. This treatment is performed by one of our aesthetic doctors.

Anti Wrinkle injections

Anti-wrinkle injections can be used on the chin area to decrease chin movement and soften chin dimpling.

Dermal Fillers

We can strategically add dermal filler to make a prominent chin or jaw look smaller – by making it bigger but more balanced. We can recontour the chin and jawline by adding dermal filler into hollows and rounding out square shapes – or squaring out round shapes.

Skin tightening treatments that complement chin liposuction

Chin liposuction can work with skin-tightening treatments. Sagging skin is not an immediate result of liposuction, but it may become more obvious after the fat is removed.

We have a range of skin-tightening treatments, with our new favourite being non-invasive radiofrequency treatments using the ThermiRF device. Radiofrequency treatments tighten skin by shrinking proteins, but treatments improve collagen and elastin production over the months following treatment. Results keep improving over time.

Radiofrequency treatments target fibroblasts, your collagen-producing cells and stimulate them into action. The result is often tighter, smoother skin that lasts. No surgery, no pain, no needles; just a focus on collegan.

If you have sagging, wrinkled skin on your neck, radiofrequency treatments can help to enhance your chin liposuction procedure results.

Chin and jawline suture and/or thread lifts could also be options for further tightening of the kind. Both these procedures aren’t permanent but they do help with lifting and tightening in the short term.

Your doctor will evaluate your face and neckline, and recommend the best option.

How can I prevent a double chin from appearing again in the future?

Once the fatty tissue is eliminated via chin liposuction, it can never reappear. What may crop up as you age is sagging neck skin or platysma bands that protrude, which are treated differently.

Platysma bands in the neck are the vertical muscles that, when you grimace, are visible. As we age, these become more pronounced as they tighten and the skin covering them becomes less elastic. We have individual treatments for other neck, chin and jaw concerns you may have, but they will likely not include liposuction.

Caring for your new chin and neck

Your immediate aftercare is one step your doctor will go over with you.  One of the most important things you can do for your face and neck is to avoid getting sun on your skin in those areas, since the skin is thinner and more easily damaged than other areas of the body. The neck and face are also the areas most likely to face the sun.

Your doctor will offer you advice for caring for the skin on your neck, and recommend any ongoing maintenance treatments that could help as you age

Will I be satisfied with the results ?

One of the key elements of getting any cosmetic procedure is managing your expectations. Cosmetic surgery isn’t magic; it’s a procedure to help to aesthetically adjust an area of your body so it is more pleasing to you.  With cosmetic surgery, having reasonable expectations is important because each of us is built slightly differently, our skin heals and recovers at its own pace, and sometimes things don’t turn out how we expected. Your doctor will discuss expectations with you, showing you before and after photographs and explaining what you can reasonably expect from the procedure.

Your aesthetic goals are ours – your happiness and satisfaction are why we do what we do.

Chin & Jowl Tightening & Liposuction –  FAQ

If you are generally healthy and can heal well, you can have liposuction. There are some instances where it is not appropriate; for example, we cannot perform liposuction on anyone pregnant. If you are elderly, generally unwell or unable to heal well, then liposuction may not be the best option, at least at the moment. Every surgery comes with risks, and your ability to heal quickly and completely is important.

There are two main subgroups of patients who opt for chin liposuction: those with a genetic double chin and those with weight or age-related double chins. We treat these groups the same, but the former group is likely to come in at a younger age than the latter.

Every surgery comes with risks, and liposuction is no different, though it’s important to understand that the chin/neck area is a very small liposuction procedure. We have an excellent track record at ENRICH Clinic, so while there is no expectation of complications, they do sometimes unexpectedly occur. We will fully inform you of what to look out for as you heal so that you can call us and we can investigate without delay.

The risks of any liposuction treatment include internal punctures, infection and nerve damage. Your practitioner counts for everything here, so choose the best in the business and don’t risk your looks with an inexperienced or cheap physician.

We numb the treatment area with a local anaesthetic before your treatment and the tumescent technique also places a partly aesthetic fluid under the skin. There may be some discomfort after treatment that is managed effectively with over-the-counter pain medication.

Because chin liposuction is a short procedure with very minimal damage to a small area of tissue, you can expect healing to be quick.

Liposuction, in our experience, it takes 1-2 weeks for the swelling to resolve and the area to look normal. Once all the swelling has resolved, your new profile will be visible.

With Trusculpt, the area will feel a little tender for a few hours but no real swelling can be seen.

Fat Dissolving injections often swell and in some cases bruising can appear. This usually dissipates over 1 – 2 weeks

You can expect to keep your results over the long-term. Normal ageing of the skin means you will experience normal sagging of the skin, but the fat pocket will not return.

We use a local anaesthetic for our liposuction procedures, which means you do not ‘go under’ (to sleep) while Dr Rich works. You will be able to communicate with us and we ensure you are comfortable during the procedure. Because of the area we are working on, you can’t do much talking, but we can stop and start as required if you need something. Your comfort is our top priority.

Dr Rich will inform you in terms of compression garments before and after your procedure. You may need to wear a compression garment for a short time, but this isn’t always the case. Feel free to call and talk to one of our team about what you can expect.

Winter is a good choice in terms of timing since you can wear scarves and high necks while you heal, but any time of year is suitable. You can match the timing of your procedure to whatever suits your schedule and budget.

Once the swelling resolves, you will be able to see your results.  We estimate about two weeks, though every patient is a little different. Dr Rich will explain what he expects to happen based on how much fat he is removing.

Please Note:

*With all surgeries or procedures, there are risks. Consult your physician (GP) before undertaking any surgical or cosmetic procedure. Please read the consent forms carefully and be informed about every aspect of your treatment. Surgeries such as liposuction have a mandatory seven-day cooling-off period to give patients adequate time to be sure of their surgery choice. Results may also vary from person to person due to many factors, including the individual’s genetics, diet and exercise. Before and after photos are only relevant to the patient in the photo and do not necessarily reflect the results other patients may experience. Ask questions. Our team of dermatologists, doctors and nurses are here to help you with any of your queries. This page is not advice and is intended to be informational only.
