What causes acne?

Acne is generally the result of a number of factors. It is predominantly genetic and hormonal, but may also be the result of:

A recent study published in the British Journal of Dermatology examined a group of participants both with and without acne found that the probability of developing major depression was 18.5% amongst patients with acne and 12% amongst those without. Similarly, research suggests that following a diagnosis of acne the risk of diagnosis of major depressive disorder can spike by up to 60% in comparison to the general population.
